History of Maids in the Filipino Culture
For as long as I remember, we have had help in the house even when my mother was a housewife. Being middle class, almost everyone I knew had hired help, my relatives had theirs and my friends as well. Help was usually a woman, young or old, single or married, with children or without, who has some form of education but usually is not a college graduate, stays in for work or stays out, cleans, cooks, does the laundry, irons the clothes, takes care of children, by herself or with other help, always around, always keeping the house in order almost all days of the month. The only Filipinos who usually don't hire help are those abroad.

Old methods were to call friends or relatives in the province for referrals but this still works from time to time. You can already be productive in looking at the comfort of your own couch.
